Established in 1810, this town has a long history as a trade center, first depending on the Duck River and then the railroad in the mid-1800s. During the Civil War, it was known as "Little Boston" for its pro-Union stance.
The square is home to historic buildings like the Bedford County Courthouse, the fifth to stand on this spot. Confederate soldiers accidentally set fire to the courthouse here in 1863; another was burned by a lynch mob.
