First erected in 1824, the Haywood County Courthouse was rebuilt in 1832 and has since undergone several renovations. According to local lore, the money for the 1928 work was borrowed from a resident farmer, Dee Evans. When it was not repaid on time, Evans threatened to fill the courthouse with hay.
