The Churchwell Picture Show first opened its doors on Nov. 10, 1931, with Will Rogers starring in “A Connecticut Yankee.” In 1940, its name was changed to the Savannah Theater and films were shown until March 1978. In early 2013, the City of Savannah completed renovations of the theater and held a grand reopening starring Jason D. Williams. The theater continues to be a cultural asset to the community hosting live performance plays, Main Street events, as a venue for private occasions.
