If you visit in mid-to-late June, you'll be rewarded with the opportunity to see the Roan Mountain Rhododendron Gardens in bloom. It's the world's largest natural rhododendron garden, and during peak bloom it creates a lovely sea of purple and magenta splendor. Visitors can learn more by attending the park's annual outdoor drama, "Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals," held every July in the park amphitheater which details the story of colonists who settled here in the late 18th century. Walkers, runners and cyclists can enjoy this trail that salutes the history of the Tweetsie Railroad, which once ran from Johnson City to Cranberry, N.C. Stop and read the interpretive markers along the trail to learn more about significant stops on the historic railroad line. The Tweetsie Trail is in the early stages of expanding and will stretch 14 miles when completed.

Cyclers also shouldn't miss the Hampton Watershed Trails, a mountain bike system that offers a variety of challenges for beginner, intermediate and expert riders. One of the system's most challenging loops known as The Cat's Pajamas starts with an intense, steep 1.6-mile climb.

You'll likely first notice the white clapboard Covered Bridge built in 1882, spanning 134 feet across the Doe River that runs through downtown. Waterfalls near Elizabethton

Discover the scenic waterfalls in the area. Laurel Fork Falls is a popular destination for experienced hikers. The trail is considered challenging and takes about two hours roundtrip. It is accessible either via the Hampton Blueline/Laurel Falls Trail or via the Appalachian Trail at Dennis Cove Road.

For a shorter hike, check out Blue Hole Falls located at the base of Holston Mountain. It is easily accessed from Tennessee State Route 91 and is located just a short walk from the parking area, although the stairs going down to the lower pool may be slippery during wet or icy conditions.
