Haslam Announces Grant for Parker's Crossroads Trail Project

Jul 13, 2012

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer today announced a $330,831 grant to complete the Battle of Parker’s Crossroads Trail Project.

The grant funds Phase II of the project, which will complete the Battle of Parker’s Crossroads Trail Project by tying into the existing trail on the southern end, constructing a trail loop in the northeast corner of the trail system, and construction of a new trail north of Interstate 40.

The nine-foot-wide asphalt trail will feature signage, photos and markers to highlight historically significant areas and new benches.

“Tennessee’s Civil War battlefields are wonderful educational destinations, and they attract thousands of visitors to the state each year,” Haslam said. “This trail system will highlight some of the rich history of this area, while also providing pedestrians with enhanced access to the entire Parker’s Crossroads Battlefield.”

“Through transportation enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $270 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” Schroer said.  “This program has assisted communities all over the state in their efforts to revitalize downtowns, highlight historic areas, provide alternative means of transportation, and increase opportunities for economic development.”

The grant is made possible through a federally-funded program administered by TDOT.

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

State Sen. Roy Herron (D-Dresden) and Rep. Steve McDaniel (R-Parker’s Crossroads) represent Henderson County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
