Confederate commander Gen. Braxton Bragg established his headquarters here Jan. 1, 1863 expecting to see a Union retreat following his assaults earlier that da’y. But Federal forces instead formed a new line awaiting renewed Confederate attacks. Here, Bragg ordered a reluctant Breckinridge to make the fatal final assault the next day.
