David "Tinker Dave" Beatty was a Union guerrilla warfare expert in the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee. Beginning in 1862, he led a group of independent scouts in and around his home in an attempt to protect his family from the Confederate guerrillas led by Champ Ferguson. He testified against Champ Ferguson at the end of the war even though they had used similar tactics.
