The two Visitor's Center, located in Maryville and Townsend, are operated by The Smoky Mountain Tourism Development Authority's which directs its efforts toward attracting appropriate tourism business to the area, providing authentic experiences for the traveling public, and being a good neighbor to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Through the operation of welcome centers, SMTDA informs tourists of accommodations and attractions and works with local businesses, travel writers, travel agents and tour operators. As an arm of county government, the Tourism Authority works with the Chamber and Economic Development Board and is wholly funded by the county's hotel/motel tax.
