The community of Pittman Center had a strong desire to showcase its cultural heritage, and out of that desire came the Pittman Center Heritage Museum, located in the new Pittman Center Elementary School. The motto for the museum is “heritage is that which we have received from our ancestors and are obligated to pass on,” and the museum passes that heritage along through artifacts, archives and local stories on display. The museum is operated by the Pittman Center Heritage Museum Foundation and is open to the public during school hours and on Saturday, and by appointment during the summer months.

The Town of Pitman Center has a proud mountain heritage. The first settler, Frederic Emert, was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. He and his family arrived to the area in 1784 and settled in the fertile valley along the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River and today that valley bears their name– Emerts Cove. With the establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934, many families relocated to this valley, bringing with them their traditions and values. Make plans to visit the Pittman Center Heritage Museum to enjoy this history for yourself.
