The 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway and Byway commemorates the ancient trail used by animals and people that connected portions of the Mississippi River to the salt licks in central Tennessee.
It took “Kaintucks” about 30 days to walk along the Trace, carrying goods to sell at the port of New Orleans. Numerous short hiking trails are some of the best examples of the "Old Trace." Though the Trace is traveled year-round, autumn is the best time to experience the brilliant foliage of the hickory, maple, and oak hardwood forests.
Regardless of your interests, there are plenty of opportunities to get out of your car and experience the parkway. There are more than a dozen campgrounds along the Natchez Trace Parkway corridor and numerous opportunities for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
