The original Mount Lebanon Baptist Church was established in 1843, the first of its kind for former slaves in Tennessee. Its congregation has met in this building since 1885. A school for African-Americans began in the church building after the Civil War ended, enduring even after the Ku Klux Klan ordered it to disband. The surrounding area evolved into an African-American business district known as Mink Slide after World War II.
