Moses Fisk established the town of Hilham in 1803, the first
town in Overton County. One year later, he opened the Fisk Female
Academy, one of the first girls’ schools in the South. He
and his wife are buried in Fisk Cemetery, which has an incredible collection of headstones and markers influenced by local
folk art traditions from the Antebellum era
through the 20th century. The Fisk home is now on the grounds of Standing Stone State Park & State Forest.
