Highlander serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. Highlander was founded by Myles Horton in 1932. Highlander worked to build progressive labors movements in the 1930s and 40s. In the 50s and 60s, Highlander changed its focus to the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks attended a school desegregation workshop at Highlander four months before sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. “ Through popular education, participatory research, and cultural work, we help create spaces — at Highlander and in local communities — where people gain knowledge, hope and courage, expanding their ideas of what is possible.
