Singer, songwriter, actress, multi-instrumentalist, author, philanthropist, Dolly Parton is best known for her work in country music. You may know her by some of the 3,000 songs she's composed, among them: "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You," "Coat of Many Colors," "9 to 5," and "My Tennessee Mountain Home." As one of the most successful female country artists, Dolly is known as "The Queen of Country Music."
Born in Sevierville, Dolly performed as a child on local radio and television programs.
She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984; a star on the Nashville Star Walk for Grammy winners; and a bronze sculpture on the courthouse lawn in Sevierville. Parton was awarded the Living Legend Medal by the U.S. Library of Congress on April 14, 2004, for her contributions to the cultural heritage of the United States. This was followed in 2005 with the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given by the U.S. government for excellence in the arts, presented by the U.S. President. On December 3, 2006, Parton received the Kennedy Center Honors from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for her lifetime of contributions to the arts.
