Developed by Colonel James M. Grant, cousin of President Ulysses S. Grant, Christiana was once a bustling, whistle-stop community along the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. An abolitionist, Grant chose the name to honor African-Americans who stopped the capture of runaway slaves in Pennsylvania during the controversial 1851 “Christiana Riot”. The early town included a three-star hotel, bank, telephone office and 15 other businesses.
