Chattanooga National Cemetery

City: Chattanooga, TN
Region: East Tennessee

The largest cemetery in the state, Chattanooga National Cemetery's 121 acres hold the remains of veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War, as well as 186 graves of German prisoners-of-war from both World Wars. It is the only national cemetery to contain the graves of foreign POW's.

The cemetery was established in December 1863 to provide a proper burial for Union soldiers killed in battles around Chattanooga. It expanded a cemetery Gen. George Thomas established after the battle of Missionary Ridge.

Over 12,000 Union soldiers were interned in this cemetery. Most notable were the famed "Andrews' Raiders," who hijacked the locomotive “General” in April 1862, four of whom were the first soldiers to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Located at the corner of Holtzclaw and Bailey Avenue. Main entrance on Holtzclaw.
