Serving as the seat of Smith County, this former riverboat town was founded by Colonel William Walton, surveyor of the old Walton Road that connected East and Middle Tennessee. In the heyday of the steamboat era, this was known as the Â“River City,Â” an important stop for steamboat traffic with three ferries operating from the town.
