Tennessee Music Pathways
Isaac Hayes was born in Covington, about an hour north of Memphis. Isaac Hayes' soul records and dramatic stage presence had a resonating influence on soul, funk, disco and rap music. Hayes explored African-American cultural issues in the late 1960s, paving the way for Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and others to redefine the soul album. Isaac Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.
