The Tennessee Polk Salad Festival is a celebration of Appalachian foods, arts, and nostalgic activities. Festivities will include local musicians, dancers, Renaissance Festival Players, art and craft booths with live demonstrations: blacksmithing, pottery on the wheel, weaving, pokeberry ink, and other activities suitable for both children and adults. The main attraction – polk salad – is served by the American Legion Auxiliary #50 and benefits local veterans programs. Many spelling variations exist for this indigenous Southern plant, but this festival uses “Polk Salad” in honor of the Elvis Presley song “Polk Salad Annie.” Begun in 2008 by the Webb family of the Rocky Top General Store, the event is now sponsored by the Arts Council of Roane County. The Festival is packed with Appalachian foods, arts, crafts, and nostalgic activities. No admission fee.
