“Backpacking Stories” program by Sue Jenkins to be at Blount County Public Library
MARYVILLE, TN (November 3, 2008) Once the reader discovers the full title for the book, he/she learns a lot about Maryville author, Sue K. Jenkins.
The title reveals a person who is passionate about hiking and backpacking. She loves the mountains, especially the Great Smoky Mountains and the National Park of the same name. She lives in a city. She provides at least a nod to the discomforts affiliated with avid, regular hiking. She loves words: I.e., note the l-o-n-g title name. There’s also a hint of a sense of humor.
That hint becomes more obvious if the reader turns to the back cover of the book and scans some of the quotes from fellow hiker friends, the final one a critique after reading chapter 23, “ ‘Sue, I would give you an ‘A’ but must deduct a grade level for insanity!’ She then circled in red a ‘B’.” And let it be noted that the author selected that quotation as a back cover testimonial....
With that introduction, Jenkins begins her book, Backpacking Stories of a City Girl Who Apparently Loves Misery: In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
After the first chapter, the reader is left to ponder why in the world anyone would even consider venturing forth on a second mountain trek after such a traumatic first trip which Jenkins describes as “A Fine and Pleasant Misery,” borrowing the title of the book by Patrick McManus.
Nevertheless, Jenkins trudges on and completes many more hikes which also then result in her recent book from which she plans to share tales at the Blount County Public Library at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, November 6.
Jenkins outlines the program topics as “Circumstances in 1987 prior to when I started hiking,” “Day hikes / overnights in Smokies,” “My favorite trail,” “Amazing moments in time,” “Funny memories,” “About being lost in the Smokies,” and last but not least, “What about bears & snakes?”.
After hiking for almost 18 years, Jenkins is a member of the 900 Miler Club, meaning that she has hiked every trail in the Smoky Mountains, and she’s working on Map #2.
For an entertaining evening, plan to attend this program whether you’re a novice hiker, experienced hiker, or a person who has absolutely no intention of ever hiking…but still might enjoy the “miseries” of one who invites an audience to share in the stories.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
