Hatching the Past Leaving ETSU Natural History Museum Visitors only have a limited time to see “Hatching the Past,” the temporary exhibit at East Tennessee State University and General Shale Brick Natural History Museum and Visitors Center at the Gray Fossil Site. “Hatching the Past” will be leaving the museum on June 1st. The exhibit features dinosaur eggs and babies and has amazing collections of real dinosaur eggs representing six different major groups of dinosaurs. All are brought to life with colorful paintings showing dinosaurs as parents and sculptures of babies ready to hatch. Multimedia and interpretive labels summarize the latest findings of dinosaur experts. The exhibit has been at the museum since September 2012. In June 2013, the museum will house a new temporary exhibit, “Peanuts…Naturally.” The new exhibit will explore environmental and ecological issues. The ETSU Natural History Museum and Gray Fossil Site continually showcases the 5-million-year-old Gray Fossil Site and its unique ecosystem. Visitors are invited to observe live excavations May through October. There are also many special events held at the Museum, such as the monthly “Lunchtime Lecture Series,” “Fossil & Artifact ID Nights” every other month, and many ongoing youth programs. The museum is located 1.8 miles off Exit 13 on Interstate 26. For more information, call (866) 202-6223 or visit the museum at www.etsu.edu/naturalhistorymuseum.
