Jazz Pianist Donald Brown and guests

An internationally renowned jazz pianist and educator, Donald Brown has also been a prolific composer. He grew up in Memphis and actually started out on drums and trumpet. By the time he attended Memphis State University, he was playing jazz piano. Brown is part of what is called the Memphis Three, a trio of exceptional keyboard talents that passed through Memphis State University in the 70s that includes James Williams and Mulgrew Miller. After years of local work, Brown replaced James Williams with the Jazz Messengers as a sideman for the late, great drummer and bandleader Art Blakey. He went on to teach at Berklee (1983-1985) and the University of Tennessee (starting in 1988), recorded albums as a leader for Sunnyside and Muse, and had his compositions performed and recorded by a wide variety of top modern jazz players. Brown is noted by jazz critics and other greats as the master composer. He became widely known for his Grammy-nominated composition "The Insane Asylum " which was first heard on Wynton Marsalis’ album "J Mood. Performance starts at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern.
