The fashions and manners of the Civil War years strongly reflected the Victorian era when modesty was the rule of the day. The fashionable silhouette of the 1861-1865 periods focused on the tightly laced corseted bodice with the waistline resting at the natural waist, voluminous elaborately trimmed skirts worn over hoop petticoats, long full sleeves and high demure necklines. Lavishly decorated bonnets and hats complimented the ensemble. There was an infinite variety of designs and construction details, particularly in ladies apparel, in the 1860s.
