HANDS ON HISTORY PROGRAM EXPLORES CIVIL WAR LIFE IN A ZOUAVE UNIFORM

Sep 5, 2014

A Hands on History program will feature the Zouave soldier, a colorful aspect of the Civil War, 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 at Carnton Plantation.

Inspired by the battle dress of the French Army’s revered Zouave battalion, the colorful uniform was characterized by loose trousers, a short jacket, a vest, a sash and a fez hat. The uniform, and pageantry generally associated with it, was adopted by many Union and Confederate volunteer regiments in 1861.

Highlights of the class include a Zouave re-enactor who will demonstrate soldier life in his uniform. Children will have the opportunity to make their own Zouave-inspired vest, hat and sash. The class will conclude with a scavenger hunt on the Carnton Plantation grounds.

Hands on History is a monthly program for kids (ages 5-12) provided by The Battle of Franklin Trust. Classes are held at The Carter House or Carnton Plantation and allow children to experience different aspects of the 1860s and Civil War life. From archaeological digs to a traditional Victorian Halloween, participants partake in authentic experiences, crafts and treats.

Reservations are required. The cost is $15 per child. To register, contact Angell Roberts at 615-794-0903 or angell@battleoffranklintrust.org.
